Your career as a firefighter starts with learning the requirements of the state that you intend on serving in. Most states have a minimum age requirement as well as strict standards in terms of physical fitness. Many states also may require a psychological test to ensure that you can handle all of the challenges that you will most likely face as a firefighter. Another consistent requirement from state to state is that their firefighters have at least a high school diploma or GED. The educational requirement of each state varies, with very few having a requirement beyond a high school diploma. However, landing a job as a firefighter is quite competitive. This is a popular career field, and the demand for firefighters generally parallels the population growth of a given area. In other words, it is unlikely that you will see a “boom” in the demand for firefighters. The point is, it is strongly encouraged that you stand out when applying for a vacancy. One of the ways you can do this is by earning a degree in fire science, or even in emergency management. Having a degree may just give you the edge over other candidates.
