Become a Firefighter in Pennsylvania

PennsylvaniaBecoming a firefighter in Pennsylvania could be a great opportunity for you as long as you have what it takes. Intelligence, the ability to commit, bravery and strength are some things that you will need. You do not need to have degrees from top colleges to qualify for becoming a firefighter, as you would with other careers. However, having a degree in fire science from schools with a good reputation can be beneficial to you down the line.

How to Become a Firefighter in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is a large state with many different cities and towns, each of which has a fire department. Different departments are going to have different standards and different requirements for becoming a firefighter, and you will need to contact the departments that you are considering so you can get all of the details. They may also have different methods of training and different training facilities.

In Philadelphia, for example, the Philadelphia Fire Academy trains recruits, and they have programs for paramedics and firefighters already on the job. Firefighter training at this facility is going to take five months to complete, and two of those months are for EMT training. They graduate with an EMT certificate as well as a Firefighter I certificate that they can use.

When you are applying to departments, you will find that you need to go through several levels of examinations. You will have to be able to take and pass a written test, and you will have to pass the physical fitness test. After passing those, you will need to be able to pass a background test, a medical test, and likely a psychological test as well.
