How to Become a Firefighter in New York

You will first need to take and pass the state’s civil service test. In most areas, the test is going to cover logical reasoning, mechanical reasoning, reading comprehension, and similar matters. Once you pass the civil service test, you will then have to take the Candidate Physical Ability Test, also known as the CPAT. This test has a course that simulates the type of action you might see while fighting a fire.
If they pass the CPAT, they will be able to go on a waiting list for when positions open. Once hired by a department, the firefighters are in a probationary period and still have to complete their basic firefighting training.
